Welcome to Sprague Library's Speculative Fiction Blog
This blog was prompted by two things: the exhibit I created based on Sprague's science fiction collection on the history of women authors in SF, and Jezmynne's and my aim to expand this library's SF holdings. Where would you like to see our collection go? Should we focus on titles pertinent to our holdings in computer science, engineering, the history of flight? Are you more interested in keeping up on current releases or would you like to have a more historical perspective on SF?
My personal interests tend to soft SF, titles based on psychology, sociology, and anthropology. Jezmynne and my backgrounds are in Humanities (although other library staff have backgrounds in Geology and Botany.) Since we lack the skills to critique and fact-check current hard SF titles, we will need your help in developing that portion of our collection. (For example, I'd rely on you to provide a nuanced discussion of Fourth Planet from the Sun: Tales of Mars from the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction by Gordon Van Gelder. )
We also wanted to create a place where Harvey Mudd College, Claremont Consortium, and the fan community at large could talk about Speculative Fiction, one linked to the physical presence of the books, themselves. (Think of a book club or a bookstore discussion group, with the exception that our books are free ;)
The majority of Sprague's SF holdings are in the McNaughton and browsing book, both located to the right of the circulation desk.
This blog is dedicated to the memory of Douglas Adams.
